GIRLS VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS VENICE :

The Dolphins beat Venice in the City Section Open Division girls championship at Southwest College on November 7 in three sets 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18. It was the 31st section crown for Palisades, which won its title four years ago when the 2020 fall season was delayed because of Covid.

Sports writer Steve Galluzzon reported in the Sunday, November 9 L.A. Times (Palisades Defeats Venice to Claim City Title) that Palisades senior libero Lucy Neilson said, “Our slogan all year was ‘no gym,’ no problem. Today we came with a ‘leave it all out there’ mentality.”

In the Division II CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships, the Palisades, ranked tenth, will now go up against the seven-seed Carlsbad in Round One. The Tuesday, November 11 game will be at 6 p.m. at Carlsbad. Palisades is 35-7 (in a season without a home gym, constantly seeking practice sites) against the Carlsbad Lancers who are 24-9.

GIRLS TENNIS TAKES TITLE:

Palisades High School Dolphins take 30th Section Title at the Balboa Sports Center in Encino on October 30. This gave coach Bud Kling, who started coaching boys tennis  in 1979 and girls in 1985, his 54th City Title.

The Girls Title was bittersweet. Despite losing his home in the Palisades Fire, Kling has battled since August to find a place for his girls’ team to practice. Finally, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks consented to letting the Dolphins use the Rec Center Tennis courts, which had been closed after the January 7 Fire. Despite having to attend numerous meetings to advocate for a place to play and using different locations to practice, individual team members came through brilliantly

The top-seeded Dolphins defeated Granada Hills 24 ½ to 5 in the Open Division.  Sports editor Steve Galluzzo reported in the L.A. Times that “Anne Kelly and Nicole Nguyen swept their three set at No. 1 doubles and seniors Ella Engel and Anais Israels, swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.”  Winning was PaliHi No.1 singles player Shaya Jovanovic. In the No.2 position, Maria Kandinova also won in three sets.
