For Homeless Children Is Underway

Palisades Cares, founded by Palisades resident Marie Steckmest, has launched its annual drive for school supplies for homeless children served by School on Wheels.

As you shop for your children, consider having them select a second of everything, such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, pencils, erasers, notebooks, wide-ruled paper, binders, graphing paper and backpacks in bright colors or cartoon characters, to donate to another child.

If you have an older child, have them pick out a Jansport backpack, mechanical pencils, pens, mini staplers and staples for a homeless kid that would be about his/her age.

The new items maybe dropped off at the Palisades-Malibu YMCA (Via de la Paz), Regal Cleaners (Via de la Paz/Antioch) or CVS (Swarthmore). The deadline is August 12.

School on Wheels, founded in 1993, provides one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to homeless children in grades K through 12 who live in shelters, motels and cars, as well as group foster homes.

The organization offers weekly tutoring, school supplies, assistance in entering school, help in locating lost records, scholarships, guidance for parents in educational matters and a learning center located in the heart of Skid Row.

The nonprofit needs volunteer tutors, and high school students are invited to apply to tutor (visit: schoolonwheels.org).

    Hi Marie,

So glad I saw this. Running out this AM to get supplies. Our community is so blessed to have you and the work you do.

I reached out to Marie to ask if a check was okay and I’m still waiting to hear back–as soon as I do, I will update.
