(Editor’s note: Realtor Michael Edlen sent the message below to Governor Gavin Newsom in response to the passage of SB 79 by the state legislature. Many Palisadians don’t realize this could affect Pacific Palisades because people say we don’t have a transit hub. The bill is written to allow developers to build large apartment buildings on residential and commercial lots within a walkable half mile of well-trafficked public transit stops. That could include Sunset buses. Pacific Palisades is not just another neighborhood classified as being in a high fire severity zone, Governor.
January’s experience demonstrated the tremendous challenges faced by this community — and even given three years by this bill for the area to have fire prevention measures figured out better, it could be catastrophic even worse than this year if the density is increased by any degree.
If that fire had happened at night, you would have been dealing with the loss of hundreds of lives in addition to probably the total destruction of even more of the community. Since the Senator chose not to include any exemption to prevent this additional risk to life and property, I implore you to veto the bill and give it more time to work out such incredibly difficult challenges.
If not, your conscience will bear some heavy load if and when the consequences occur. By the way, presumably you are aware that there are essentially only two routes out of Pacific Palisades! If Pacific Coast highway became impassible, Sunset would be the only exit route.

The government must not pass legislation that ignores risk to specific communities
