There is a great upcoming opportunity for all Pacific Palisades residents: give blood and receive a free box of Girl Scout cookies.
The blood drive will be on Sunday, March 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Palisades Recreation Center at 851 Alma Real Drive. Look for the mobile blood donation CHLA (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles) blue bus.
Troop Leader Gloria Kim wrote, “I’m SO PROUD of my fifth and sixth graders in Girl Scouts Troop 9565!” Kim told Circling the News that the girls researched, planned, organized, and are hosting a mobile blood drive so they can earn their prestigious Girl Scouts Bronze Awards – one of the highest awards in Girl Scouting.
To register, visit: CHLAdonateblood.org and click on “locate a blood drive.” For the zip/sponsor code, put GS9565.
CHLA writes that “the immense support from donors helps us meet 90 percent of our patients’ needs for blood transfusions each year at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.”
Blood donation qualifications are based on FDA and AABB guidelines and regulations:
- 17 years of age or older
- 110 pounds or heavier
- Able to provide a picture ID
- Able to meet the criteria for recent travelers
CHLA writes “there is always a child who needs your blood type at our hospital. Type O individuals are ‘universal donors,’ and there is always a great need for O donors. O-negative blood is used in emergency situations and is especially useful for transfusions for infants.
A person can donate blood every two months, not to exceed six times per year and the hospital needs to collect blood from about 800 donors per month to meet its needs.
