All of your friends out of town this weekend and there’s “nuthin’” to do?” Coach Mike (Mike Martin), the Lutheran youth minister, is inviting all kids ages 10 to 16 to come to the church for a free movie matinee from 2 to 5 p.m.
There will be popcorn, cookies and drinks, for the showing of Jumanji, the 1995 movie, which centered on a supernatural board game that releases jungle-based hazards on its players with every turn they take. The movie stars Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde, and Bebe Neuwirth.
Youth don’t have to RSVP, just show up (and bring friends) to 15905 Sunset Boulevard.
Coach Mike has played basketball all over the world, Australia, China, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. He worked from 2013 to 2015 for the Clippers, structuring youth camps. When he retired from professional basketball in 2016, he worked with high school teams, such as Saint Monica High School. He also offers a “tiny” hoopers program Saturday mornings.
Palisades Lutheran Pastor Dr. Martin Lee, whom Coach Mike calls “an amazing human being,” made Mike director of youth programs. Every month the Coach has an event planned.
He told CTN that “My goal is to help kids grow not just as basketball players, but as people. I create a positive environment where kids learn important life skills like working together and staying focused.”
Now, as Youth Director at Palisades Lutheran Church, the Coach wants to teach those same important life lessons.
On February 8, Reebok will sponsor an all-star basketball event at the church. To find out more about the events, go to click here.
