DWP Power Outage in Lower Huntington Palisades/Santa Monica Canyon

Janisse Quinones makes $750,000 a year to run DWP.

Last night Boca resident Sharon Kilbride planned to go to National Night Out in Stoner Park, but at 5 p.m. power was reduced, and her garage door wouldn’t open. She was able to inch it open enough to get her car out, but when she returned later that evening, there was no electricity.

Today a Huntington Palisades resident wrote “DWP is up to its usual incompetence:  there was a big power outage yesterday that affected the lower Huntington, Santa Monica Canyon and Rustic Canyon.  We lost our power at 5:45 p.m. and didn’t get it back until 2 a.m. this morning.”

Over the past few weeks, new power poles had been placed in the Santa Monica Canyon by a DWP contractor Petrelli Electric, replacing poles that were decades old. Today Kilbride questioned that company about the new poles and the possible outage.

She was told it was an LADWP problem with the circuit and had nothing to do with the new poles or line.

The power started to come back on around 10 a.m., but some did not have full power until after 11 a.m.

There was no listing on the DWP website about the outage or its cause.

The Huntington resident said, “For years we have suffered from random outages, and every time the fix turns out to be a band-aid because DWP has never done the infrastructure maintenance necessary to keep a robust system.

“Meanwhile the DWP Head Janisse Quinones continues to collect her $750,000 salary.”

How do we get rid of JANISSE Quinones , she’s UNQUALIFIED to be head of LADWP.

  2. Doug Day says:

Maybe now that everybody’s head is turned DWP can build their new substation below the Marquez playground? Make it look like a hacienda…

    Doug,

They said that they will not build on that property–

I believe Janisse was granted a security detail that originally was going to cost $750,000 per year. Interesting that Janisse receives the same amount of security coverage that our entire Pacific Palisades received pre-January 7; we all know that we had one LAPD Officer for our entire city of 35,000 people. Maybe her security detail could double down; she could work at the substation in the Palisades (and hear some candid insights from our community) and her security could also help protect our town.

We are fire victims renting in Hancock Park and we also lost power from about 5:30 pm til 8:30 pm. We couldn’t get internet either so missed the Traci Park/AEComm zoom. Glad it was recorded. I am still wondering why the head of the DWP still has her job after the Palisades fire and reservoir disaster?

You obviously know the answer to this, but are afraid to say it.

  7. Sue says:

    Mark,

I have no idea why Janisse Quinones still has her job–I wish I knew why.

As I ‘ve mentioned in numerous outlets and emails to Circling The News. There are systemic problems with the power that are not being addressed. Why are we continuing to put our faith in this unchecked monopoly to suddenly fix everything? Let alone take on a new project management role which they have never been tasked. You still have one engineer and one inspector assigned for the west side. Maybe this message will finally sink in by November 2025.

There are steps we can take now to improve this situation but we are wasting time.
