Pacific Palisades Troop 223 is the premier Scout Troop in the United States. Mike Lanning has been the Scoutmaster for more than 60 years. In November 2024, his 1000th Eagle Scout graduated, far more than any other Troop in the nation.
“Scouting is an adventure that is fun and challenging,” Lanning said. “Scouting builds self-confidence and leadership skills.”
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouts. The list of successful people receiving the rank includes astronauts, governors, senators, representative and businessmen.
To receive the rank of Eagle Scout requires planning, leadership and service. Colleges understand that and that honor gives kids an edge when applying to prestigious schools.
An informational meeting for parents of prospective new Scouts will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan American Legion Post 283, at 15247 La Cruz Drive on Monday, October 20.
If your son or daughter is 10, 11 or 12 in the fifth or sixth grade, you are welcomed to find out more about this educational program, which uses the outdoors as part of the classroom, while teaching innovation and resiliency. Friendships that occur can last a lifetime.
“We teach girls and boys how to make moral and ethical choices, and our troop emphasizes teaching leadership,” said Greg Frost. “We also teach independence and self-confidence. We will teach your son and/or daughter how to be a better spouse, parent, community leader, and CEO.”
One parent wrote: ““As part of 223G, it couldn’t be more gratifying to see my daughters catch salmon in Alaska, climb Half Dome, survive in the wilderness for two weeks, learn how to wake board and have the opportunity to lead other girls. They have made close friends along the way.”
If one is interested, but cannot attend this meeting, a make-up meeting will be held Monday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Legion, 15247 LaCruz Drive. If you have questions, contact Frost at frostfamily@frostinvestigations.com.

I got my Eagle November 1968. Surrendered my summer that year to Founder’s Oak, clearing, planting, watering, (Thanks, Women’s Club for the faucet and Thanks, Palisades Garden Center for the 3 100′ hoses) and filling 63 banana boxes with trash, weeds and debris. I called the city to arrange for a trash truck and actually spoke to the Director of Public Works who said sure, Thursday, 2:00pm. I was there, the truck was on time, I insisted on tossing the boxes while the driver ran the levers and then he let ME run the levers on the final load. Good times. PS That was back when the City of LA actually functioned with services provided in exchange for your tax bill. Good times indeed.
