The director of Palisades Montessori Center, Angela DeSilva has been nominated for a teaching award from TOMS Shoes.
When TOMS asked, “What’s a story or moment that captures how the nominee has created impact as an educator and how does this teacher reflect the TOMS values of joy confidence and purpose in their classroom?”
A parent wrote CTN that DeSilva’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. “Those who know her know she’s an outstanding and compassionate teacher, and she heroically evacuated preschoolers the day of the fire.”
The school located off Marquez Avenue, was difficult to access during the Palisades January 7 Fire as parents rushed not only to the Center, but also to Marquez Elementary, which was a block further up the street. Traffic was jammed and evacuation nearly impossible.
The parent said that DeSilva helped preschoolers, whose parents were stuck in traffic, and also sent students with teachers to help them reunite with parents. “She took four students to their parents, to make sure they were safe and with their families.
“She goes up and beyond for everyone as she did for all of us that day,” the parent said. “She’s a literal angel. No one deserves this more than Angela.”

I would have voted for her but my security member told me to NOT put birthdates online (among other specifically identifiable personal information). Sorry. I hope she does well. She deserves it.
