A Palisades resident is inviting Pacific Palisades residents who have not started rebuilding to participate in the Sunflower project.
This is a community-driven ecological restoration. A team will cultivate native sunflowers lot-by-lot through the Palisades to help remediate fire-affected soil through a natural process called phytoremediation.
The plants absorb pollutants and heavy metals while also providing beauty and habitat for local wildlife.
The group needs your permission to plant and tend ntative sunflowers on a small portion of a lot, ideally at the front edge. The cultivation team will handle everything, including planting, watering, maintenance and eventual harvest. There is no cost or effort required of a lot-owner.
The land will contribute to community healing while supporting an ancient, science-backed approach to soil restoration.

Lovely idea, BUT sunflowers are highly flammable! After the fire, I planted sunflowers at my standing home with the idea they would help remediate the soil, but then I realized they are a fire hazard and soon took them out.
Why do you say sunflowers are flammable?
