It Is Unsafe to Camp under Los Angeles Freeways

This is a growing encampment under the 10 Freeway at Sepulveda.

A fire under the 10 Freeway in November 2023, closed down that roadway. At least 16 homeless people — including a pregnant woman — living underneath the freeway were brought to shelters. More than 160 firefighters responded to the blaze, which spread across 8 acres and burned for three hours. Although the cause was attributed to arson, no one was ever charged.

Many suspected it could have started with a homeless encampment located next to the wood pallets, but both L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom disputed that allegation.

Unfortunately, many homeless encampments have been the site of fires, as people try to stay warm or cook with propane tanks.  It is puzzling that Los Angeles continues to allow homeless to live under freeways because of the dangers, not only to people driving, but also to the people sleeping and breathing that air.

The 10 Freeway at Sepulveda has become a campground for homeless. Additionally the 405 underpass at Exposition is starting to see the growth of an encampment.

This editor reached out to Councilmember Katy Yarsolvosky’s office communication deputy Leo Daube on August 18 and wrote “The homeless encampment under the 10 Freeway on Sepulveda is growing. There is garbage everywhere.

“What is Katy Yaroslavsky going to do about it?  That area is located in her district. Leaving people at that location is a public safety problem because of possible fires. Additionally, these poor people should be helped.”

There was no response.

Katy is no Tracey Price. Shame on Katy for allowing this on her watch

I have reached out to Katy’s office too and don’t even get a call back. Councilmembers like Katy have ruined our City. Santa Monica Blvd between the 405 and Beverly Hills is the gateway to Century City and Beverly Hills. People come from all over the world get off on the 405 and drive towards Beverly Hills., And all they see is homeless, encampments, and garbage on the sidewalks at every intersection. What does Katy do about it ? NOTHING. Zev, tell our daughter in law to clean it up!
