FACT OR BS: Price Gouging Is the Major Problem for Fire Survivors

Lindsery Horvath

L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath is on top of the situation to stop price gouging—except it’s about seven months too late for people who had to scramble to find a place to live after their homes were destroyed in the Palisades and Eaton Fires.

Today, July 29, she sent out a press release that her motion with Kathryn Barger would extend housing price gouging protections for residents still displaced by the devastating January 2025 wildfires through August 30, 2025. (News Flash! most of us who had homes destroyed in the fires will still be renting after August 30.)

“Seven months in, our residents still need protection from predatory practices that make housing even more unaffordable and unattainable in these times of crisis,” Horvath said. “By extending these protections, we’re helping ensure that every family has the chance to rebuild without fear of being priced out. If you suspect price gouging, report it to our Department of Consumer and Business Affairs so we can hold these bad actors accountable.”

Lindsey, here’s three bad actors you can go after: 1) Insurance companies not paying or only paying a percentage of what people are owed. No one can rebuild if they don’t have the money. 2) State Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, who so far has not required insurance companies to pay out.  Someone has to be responsible for the insurance mess in California, is it the governor or Lara? Go after one or both. 3) The high cost of construction in Southern California. Workers driving trucks and pickups require gas, and at $5 a gallon, costs get jacked up to consumers and that includes all other goods that will need to be shipped in for construction.

Here’s another bad actor that should concern you: no wild fire-warning system in the part of the County you represent.

Lindsey Horvath needs to be voted out of office. She spearheaded the “Blue Ribbon Comission” done by a bunch of libs trying to get affordable housing into the Palisades.
