Mural olors co-founder Carlos Rogel discussed the restoration of the mural with original artists Kat Kozik and Cathy Salser. The first step is cleaning it.
The Temescal Canyon Mural, which was started in 1983 by Palisades Charter High School students Kat Kozik, David Strauch, Jennifer Wilsey and Cathy Salser, needs restoration.
Led by Kozik and Salzer, money has now been raised to start the project. The first steps will be cleaning the existing 552-foot mural.
The Mural Bubblebath will be facilitated by MuralColors and all cleaning and conservation supplies will be provided. Kozik and Salzer said, “We need many hands to clean this iconic mural that has been a part of the community for more than 40 years.”
The dates for cleaning are Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. To volunteer for a three-hour shift go to: click here.
Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and close-toed tennis shoes. Sunscreen. a hat and sunglasses are also advised. “Please be sure to wear clothing that you are comfortable getting dirty,” Salser said, and added “You will be provided with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as eye protection masks, and gloves as-needed when you arrive on-site. Water and light snacks will be provided.”
The mural depicts the landscape of Pacific Palisades, particularly Temescal Canyon, painting a local history of the land and indigenous ways of life. It contrasts the historic natural landscape and way of life with a nighttime view of modern Los Angeles as seen from the still wild Santa Monica Mountains.
The completion for the restoration is planned for the summer of 2026. If one needs more information or would like to donate to the restoration and ongoing upkeep of the painting, email Salser & Kozik at tcmp.pali@gmail.com.
