A benefit concert is being held at the Pepperdine University Smothers Theatre at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. All the proceeds are going to Our Lady of Malibu.
A resident wrote: “some may wonder why money is going to Our Lady of Malibu. The church community has been affected by three fires in six years, which include the Woolsey Fire, one last December and most recently the Palisades Fire.
“I have six personal friends who lost their homes in Big Rock and Rambla Pacifica areas during the Palisades Fire,” the resident said. “While the Palisades was devastated, so was a lot of Malibu.”
The resident pointed out that with Pacific Coast Highway being closed, attendance at the church has been severely impacted.
At the concert, Martin Sheen will make a special guest appearance. There will also be a special remembrance of long-time parishioner Betty O’Meara.
With her late husband David, they ran the Malibu Cinema from 1972-1991. It was sold to Hollywood Theaters and then taken over by Regal Cinema until it closed.
Meara, 94, died during the Palisades Fires. She refused to evacuate from her Big Rock home.

According to Monsignor Charles, Pastor of
Our Lady of Malibu, the proceeds will go specifically
to provide scholarships to those children whose
families lost their homes the fire. As the Pastor
said last Sunday, the children who lost their homes
shouldn’t suffer to lose their education as well.
