Being Charged for Private Security at a House that Burned Down

Not a lot of home left to patrol.

A reader wrote that despite the fact he lost his house in the Alphabet Streets, he was being charged for security by ADT – and would be for the duration of his eight-month contract. He was also being charged for the equipment that burned.

A second reader wrote: My first post-fire with ADT, the telephone rep said I would have to pay for service up to the fire, but she would arrange to continue my contract with the next three months free–I couldn’t cancel my contract {what contract?}. A week later a sympathetic rep arranged that if we paid our past due bill (i.e. until Jan 8) she would be able to cancel our services going forward. Happy ending, but it did take quite some doing…

A third reader wrote: You might pass along the following contacts to Palisades customers who are being charged by ADT to monitor homes that don’t exist. That’s such an awful black eye. I can’t guarantee that all these folks are reachable but it’s worth a shot.

One Response to Being Charged for Private Security at a House that Burned Down

  1. Finn-Olaf Jones says:

Kind of amusing tale: Around 9:30 pm on Tuesday, January 7 I was driving around the Huntington which was about a quarter gone. I hadn’t seen a single active LA Fireman in five hours other than the ones joyriding from the beach to take selfies and the streets were empty save for a single homeowner spraying down his home with a garden hose. I parked on Alma Real to write a quick dispatch while the ashes were wafting across Potrero Canyon to set the rest of the Huntington on fire. Suddenly I was stunned when someone knocked on my window. It was one of two fully uniformed ADT guards checking to see that I wasn’t a looter. Apart from Caruso’s crew those two were the only people I met that night who were doing their jobs!
