Among the residents at the Hive on Monday morning, it was exciting as people chimed in about the idea of a super library, not just shelves of books, but a place where the community gathered events and even theater.
Everyone seemed to think this was the time not only to rebuild, but envision something remarkable. Former Citizen of the Year Jimmy Dunne weighed in yesterday.
Also expressing the idea that this new building should take us into the next century was Palisadian and well known architect Drew McTigue of MCTIGUE. His firm is an architecture, planning, design and communication firm, a collaborative studio practice that provides design and related services to individuals, businesses, corporations and governments. https://www.mctiguearchitects.com/
McTigue wrote CTN that “libraries used to be ‘transactional,’ but now are much more ‘relational.”
He said that in addition to physical and digital collections that libraries include, they can be:
- Open, experiential spaces offering much more than rooms to read
- Dynamic spaces
- Multi-purpose community hubs
- Digital access points
- Creative maker spaces
- Social gathering spots
- Learning centers
- Digital literacy training locations
- Offer diverse programs
- Collaborative spaces for all ages
Instead of just replacing the library that Pacific Palisades had, the question many are asking is “how can we make it better?”
McTigue wrote: “We went ahead and built a 3D model showing the site, neighboring properties and prior buildings. It’s approximate right now but allows us to begin a design thinking exercise within the village context!”
The 3-D model shows a gray, sort of butterfly shape on the edge of the park in the green area—with Corpus across the Street and an rebuilt 861 Alma Real next to it.
