YOM KIPPUR BEGINS
By Sue Pascoe · October 4, 2022
The holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, began at sundown Tuesday, October 4. It ends at sundown, plus one hour, on Wednesday, October 5.
Yom Kippur is the time that Jews are required to take stock of their lives, ask forgiveness from family and friends and to take steps toward self-improvement for the year to come. During Yom Kippur, people fast and attend religious services. When Yom Kippur ends, many families and friends enjoy a break-the-fast dinner at a restaurant or at home.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which dates back to October 1985. This is when the first organized movement to bring attention to the dangers of breast cancer occurred in the United States. Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer that affects women.
In 2020, an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. and 48,530 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
About 64% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%.
This year, an estimated 42,170 women will die from breast cancer in the U.S.
Although rare, men get breast cancer, too. In 2020, it’s estimated that 2,620 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S., and approximately 520 will die.
Please encourage the women in your life to get a regular mammogram.
WILL ROGERS
With the upcoming election in November, CTN went to Will Rogers for guidance on politics.
"Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself," Rogers said, and added “There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."
