At the upcoming Malibu Orchid Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, not only will Carol Helen Beule speak on Sacrochilius Orchids and how to grow them, but several members will also be recognized for plants that placed at the Huntington Orchid Show October 18-20.
The monthly orchid meeting will be held in the Hart Lounge, at the Palisades Community Methodist Church, 801 Via de la Paz. All are welcome, including novice growers.
Beule’s talk will include the warm and cool growing Sarchochilus plants. She will discuss how to grow these plants and describe many of the newest retail plants available.
The last plant discussed will demonstrate that you can never be too sure what will happened with a Sarcochilus that has not yet bloomed. Her presentation will also include many of the Australian Orchid Council awarded plants.
Beule is an Emmy award winning Costume Designer with a Master of Fine Arts in both Costume and Lighting Design from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was a professional Costume Designer from 1974 until her retirement in July of 2017. Carol Is now a fully accredited AOS Judge.
She has grown all species of orchids on her patio and two small greenhouses. Since purchasing a home at the base of the Hollywood Hills 24 years ago, and it has been her quest to discover which orchids will thrive in the unique climate she has in the dry and hot San Fernando Valley and its surrounding communities.
Malibu Orchid Society President Birute Anne Vileisis, Ph.D. wrote in the Society’s newsletter, “A special note of appreciation and gratitude to those members who exhibited their orchids at the Huntington Orchid Show this past month. These included Marc Better, Olga Amarai, Lucy and Jorge Tizol, and past members Milo Reidel and Tom Buchanan.
“Although our display included only twenty plants, they were nicely spaced and elegantly displayed to garner a third place award among all the societies for an outstanding display in our category of 21 to 40 sq. feet.”
Receiving blue ribbons were Lucy and Jorge Tizol’ Oncidium Aka Baby Raspberry Chocolate and Vileisis’ Lc. Blue Boy ‘Gainesborough’HCC/AOS.
Second place was awarded to Tizol’s Oncidium Crispum and Oncidium Copper Falls ‘Michigan’, Marc Better’s Blc. Malagold x Waikrtiana x Slc. Wendy’s Valentine, Olga Amarai’ Cattleya White Reception’NN’ and Reidel’s Vanda Pakchong x V. coerulea.
Third place went to Buchanan’s Cattleya Labiate Rubra Schumer x C. Moraela.
