One northbound lane of PCH was closed in mid-February 2024 by Caltrans below the Tramonto Slide located between Sunset Boulevard and Porto Marina.
The slide area referred to as the “Tramonto Slide” has been an issue for many years, and in the past, crews have been able to clear the slide debris on the highway to reopen lanes.
Last year, Caltrans public information officer Marc Bischoff wrote, “This most recent [Tramonto] slide originated outside of state/Caltrans right of way, although it continues to encroach onto Caltrans right of way.
“A joint study was done in 2010 by Caltrans and the City of Los Angeles, one of the property owners,” Bischoff said. “The study documented the history of the slide and recommended that long-term repairs start from the top of the slide.
“Geotechnical Division has determined the unstable nature of the slide prevents Caltrans from removing the debris from the right lane of the highway near the toe of the slide and that repairs still need to start from the top of the slide, which is outside of our jurisdiction and right of way.”
Caltrans has determined that most of the property near the top of the slide is privately owned and some of it is owned by the city of Los Angeles.
How does the City plan to stabilize the slide to prevent it from closing PCH, again?
Allow a developer to build four mansions on the slide, even though Caltrans is clear the entire hillside needs to be remediated.
This project will come up for a PLUM Hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, May 27, and residents and anyone who uses PCH, should submit a letter ASAP, asking for a Site-Specific EIR click here.
I have always thought that Castellemarre would be a wonderful spot to create a Portofino style white stucco village which could stablize the land with small well designed homes, roads, and small village…something sweet and charming. My husband and I considered buying a small lot there to get it going, but it was an uphill battle for just us with engineering challanges, LA building code/coastal commission resistence, and big mansion proponants. If an interested developer reads this, LMK.
