KIDS MISSING

By Sue Pascoe · August 8, 2022

The L.A. Times reported today that 10,000 to 20,000 kids have vanished form the Los Angeles Unified School District enrollment rosters, as the schools get ready to open on August 15. The story points out that during Covid when LAUSD schools were closed, some parents switched students to charter schools, private schools, other school districts or moved out of state, just so kids could receive an education. Schools were open in the majority of states and also in foreign countries. The story also notes that some of the kids are working, and others are children of new immigrants who don’t realize they need to enroll.

LAUSD schools receive most of their funding based on student enrollment. In a June EdSource story, “LAUSD currently enrolls more than 430,000 students, but predicts that the number will drop by another 100,000 students over the next 10 years.

CAR REPAIR

One reader wrote “No car repair or ‘Jakes’ as our family calls it, and the loss of Eli [Soufo] is tragic. Four of the mechanics should band together and start a shop here.

NEEDED CAR REPAIR

Another reader wrote: Someone asked if there might be some way the DRB (Design Review Board) or PPCC (Pacific Palisades Community Council) could exercise some authority to require at least some degree of auto service still be available in the village. Hundreds of locals depend on those two facilities and would have to drive to Santa Monica or have cars towed if no service station exists here.
