(Editor’s note: After reading Councilmember Traci Park’s newsletter: Your #Better11 Update – Rebuilding, Repairing, and Protecting the Westside, long-time resident Ron Midwin wrote the following letter to Park and also sent it to CTN.)
I have lived in Los Angeles for almost all of my 81 years, and after reading your note to us today, I am compelled to respond.
We’ve lived in Pacific Palisades for over 40 years and have lived through several fires, some which came close to our development in the Highlands, but this is the first time our community lost so many homes and lives.
I understand that while our mayor, Karen Bass, cut funding on the fire department last year, and gave billions of dollars to house the homeless, nothing has been done to clear brush or dead trees from the state. I’ve heard people say that might endanger the wildlife, how can this compare to the devastation caused by this fire?
Regarding the homeless problem, which has increased by orders of magnitude over the past years, I see nothing being done to get to the root of that problem, and find your message offensive to my sense of justice.
I go back to my youth when a mayor thought he was helping some of the trash problem by ending backyard incinerators which did reduce the smog, and that was a good thing.
But the fact that you and your associates are doing nothing to remove the brush that feeds these fires is criminal!
The one thing that has happened recently is the political climate has changed, and it is now possible for a non-political person to become president and make changes never before possible under the old system.
You and the council need to come to grips with that you no longer can get away with ignoring this as the recent elections have shown.
The fact that the Democrats have the lowest approval ratings in years, says to me we have a chance to change things that never could have happened before.
Our governor Newsom is finding this out and that’s why he continuously changes his positions and is finding he’s losing support of Californians.
Enough said. I hope you get the message and can start to do what’s right for all legitimate Californians.
