Co-owners Terry Ross and Traci Chorna wrote Circling the News on June 12: “We are unfortunately closing our doors for now. Would you be able to mention our closing sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 25, 26 and 27?”
With all dance studios still closed, 90272 Dance and Fitness Wear, which features leotards, leggings and dance shoes, has been particularly hard hit.
Located at 871 Via de la Paz, the store opened in August 2018 (in the former Palisades Bicycles space). At that time there were three dance studios in Pacific Palisades (Fancy Feet, Ballet Conservatory West and Village Arts and Enrichment), with lessons also offered at the Palisades and Rustic Canyon Recreation Centers plus The Adderley School.
Despite all this dancing activity, there was nowhere to buy dancewear in town. Ross’s two older daughters, who were members of the Palisades High dance team, and other youth dancers had to shop elsewhere.
Chorna and Ross sold all major brands such as Block, SoDanca, Mirella, Ballet Rosa, Leo, Ainsliewear and Bodies in Motion.
They wrote on their website, “We have been watching our own girls spend countless hours dancing, wearing through, losing and outgrowing shoes. We know how a shoe fits, and how a leotard looks. We know how to do a bun, and what you need for the next recital, performance or competition.”
What made this store special, besides being the only place to buy necessary dance apparel in the Palisades, is that they provided emergency service. “If you lose a shoe, we will open for you!”
Ross, who has danced since she was little, grew up in South Africa before moving to Toronto when she was 15. She attended York University and then San Diego State, where she continued to dance and received her degree.
Her husband, Gavin, who is also originally from South Africa and moved to Pacific Palisades when he was young, attended Paul Revere and graduated from PaliHi. He is the owner of L.A. Overhead Garage Door (laoverheadgaragedoor.com). “He’s done 90 percent of the doors in the Palisades,” Ross said. “Everyone knows him.”
Chorna graduated from Crossroads School and moved to Paris to attend Eurocentres School. When she entered the workforce, she represented fashion photographer Winston West for six years, then moved on to Click Models and L.A. Models, where she was a booker.
She worked as a flight attendant for MGM Grand Air, based out of New York, but when the company folded, she moved back to Los Angeles.
She met husband Scott, an international businessman, at Father’s Office on Montana Avenue, and they moved to Hong Kong for five years, before settling in the Palisades in 2009.
In addition to dancewear and shoes at the store, dance bags, gifts, jewelry and hair accessories will be on sale June 25-27.
