PARKING VS. FUNERAL COSTS

By Sue Pascoe · July 30, 2024

There are no signs posted near Chautauqua Boulevard on Pacific Coast Highway, which abuts the sand. So, some people, who will not pay the $15 parking for a weekend day at Will Rogers State Historic Beach are parking on the busy highway. Since there are no “No Parking,” signs the Pacific Palisades Community Council was told these people can’t be asked to move their cars. A funeral in L.A. can cost between $6,500 to $20,000, and if there is a fatality along PCH, the entire roadway is shut down. It seems that people would have enough common sense not to park there—but it appears not.

WRITING CONTEST

A reminder that the annual youth summer writing contest (grades 1-12), is underway through Friends of the Palisades Library Contest Friends of the Palisades Library (friendsofpalilibrary.org). The theme this year is “A funny Thing happened on the way to . . …” All entries must be original, not more than two pages, and be submitted by September 3. Gift certificates will be given for first through third place to Diesel Bookstore at the Brentwood Country Mart.

10 COMMANDMENTS

A reader sent me the 10 commandments for seniors—but I think they can be applied to many ages.

Talk to yourself. There are times when you need expert advice.

“In style” are the clothes that still fit.

You don’t need anger management. You need people to stop irritating you.

Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for idiots that needs work.

The biggest lie you tell yourself is: I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.”

“On time” is when you get there.

You’ve noticed people your age are much older than you.

Aging has slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up.

You still haven’t learned to act your age and I hope you never will.

“One for the road” means peeing before you leave the house.

SANTA MONICA

The Santa Monica (10) Freeway was closed for more than three hours, after a pedestrian was killed after being fatally struck by a vehicle around 2:30 a.m. on July 30. Officers were called to the westbound freeway and the Fourth Street exit where they found the victim. A SigAlert was issued for the westbound lanes. The pedestrian, whose name, gender or age were not immediately known, was pronounced dead at the scene. PCH reopened at 5:15 a.m.
