VIN SCULLY

By Sue Pascoe · August 4, 2022

One reader remembered “It’s funny, isn’t it, how one encounter can define a person in your mind. I happened to be in Gelson’s back in the day when Vin Scully was walking out passed the checkout lines. The young baggers saw him. ‘Hey, Vinnie!’ they called. He stopped. Smiling his trademark smile and joked with them.  In that moment he was larger than life for me.. . . .and I don’t even like baseball.”

NEWSRACKS

A reader wrote that in the past they had some success in getting rid of newsracks that were broken and dirty. “I think I went on 311,” the reader said. “It was complicated and required lots of specific details and photos. The ordinance is below. There are once again many in town that are not in compliance, obviously.”

A portion of the ordinance notes “Relocate and/or replace or remove newsracks which result in visual blight and/or are not installed according to this code . . .. and other improvements as well as to allow the removal of abandoned newsracks.”  (visit: http://clkrep.lacity.org/onlinedocs/2000/00-1073-S2_ORD_176339_01-19-2005.pdf

NEWSRACKS 2

Another reader wrote that Section 42 of the LA Municipal Code requires permits for newsracks on public right of way. “Typically, these racks appear and there is no permit. Reporting these locations can result in action if the city feels the heat. In the early 90s we worked hard to get all the newsracks removed. I was on the design review board then.” The reader sent part of the code:

”Any newsrack which is not the subject of a valid permit application as required by the City’s implementation Rules and Regulations will be deemed to be in violation of 42.00 (f) of this code and subject to removal from the right-of-way as set forth herein.”

PARK IT ANYWHERE

LAPD found this car parked on the beach Tuesday morning. It was abandoned. Is there a discount if you park on the sand? No QR code here.
