Anyone impacted by the wildfires is invited to a free Saved by a Story Wildfire Survivor Workshop, hosted by Kathleen Katims from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 22 at the Glorya Kaufman Community Center, The Wende Museum, Third Floor, 10808 Culver Blvd, Culver City.
Palisades resident Katims has hosted free writing workshops since 2020. She has invited residents to come write to prompts, share or not share, while building community and letting unique voices be heard.
Although her home also burned in the Palisades Fire, she has continued writing workshops, (some virtual, some in person) for writers, aspiring writers, under-resourced youth, seniors, former foster youth, parents raising kids with neurodiverse children, people in recovery.
“We hope to uplift and support people by presenting stories on the theme of resilience,” Katim said and urged people to, “surprise yourself, step into flow, leave your inner critic behind, get your story on the page.”
To register for this free community writing workshop, or for more information about Saved by a Story, email kathleenkatims@gmail.com.
J.K wrote after attending her workshop, “It was the first time I could put aside inventory lists and debris removal and begin to truly process what has happened—and to do that with a group of other wildfire survivors was powerful and hopeful.”
Another S. B. wrote “While the going, and doing, post-fire has been nonstop (e.g., relocation, insurance, contractors, etc), having the opportunity to pause and reflect in this writing workshop has reminded me profoundly to tap into our essence as human BEings, not human DOings. Thank you for your community-minded hearts and acts of service.”
J.N. told Katims, “I was afraid to come because I thought there would be so much sadness and intense feelings. I was surprised that we laughed and cried, and I am so grateful for the laughter.”
