L.A. Opera is presenting live broadcasts of West Side Story on Saturday, September 27, at two locations: Santa Monica Pier and Loma Alta Park (3330 N. Lincoln Park in Altadena).
The show starts at 7:30 p.m.but soors open at 4:30 p.m. at Loma Alta Park and 5:30 at the Santa Monica Pier for a special pre-show that includes balloon animals, face painting from Work of Heart and a set from a Magic Castle magician. There will be local food vendors and performances from local community groups. Giveaways and raffles are planned.
Join the Sharks: Attendees at the Santa Monica Pier can get up close and personal with a baby shark viewing tank provided by Heal the Bay Aquarium.
Join the Jets: Attendees at Loma Alta Park can dive into the history of jet propulsion and enjoy a demonstration courtesy of Caltech.
They story is about New York City’s West Side, which is split between the Jets and the Sharks—but these warring gangs never imagined that two of their own could fall in love. Countless fans know and love Bernstein and Sondheim’s landmark work, but few have seen it like this.
Originally conceived as an opera, L.A. Opera is bringing you the iconic musical with a brilliant cast of opera, Broadway, and Hollywood veterans, plus Jerome Robbins’ original choreography. James Conlon conducts a world-famous score, featuring favorites like Maria and Somewhere.
