September is National Preparedness Month and L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath is launching a series of emergency preparedness fairs in October and November to empower residents across Los Angeles County with tools to stay safe, informed, and prepared for disasters of all types.
“Emergency preparedness is a way of life in the Third District,” Horvath said. “Whether you’ve mapped your evacuation route and packed a go-bag, or you’re just beginning to think about disaster planning, these fairs are for you.”
There is no mention of what the County will be doing to improve a resident’s chance of survival, such evacuation alerts that work in the mountains. So many people living in the mountains in Topanga and Malibu had the electricity/power cut in high wind events.
Those areas, including Pacific Palisades Highlands have bad cell phone reception and did not receive mandatory evacuation alerts. Person after person in the Palisades Fire, credit a neighbor with warning them that it was time to leave.
One would also like to hear how L.A County is working on brush clearance in very high fire severity zones.
One would like to know how the fire department learns about brush fires – is it through the cameras placed in the mountains by San Diego Alert California? How fast is the response time and how many planes/helicopters are available for fire fighting. Are there any new methods for fighting fires?
In her announcement, Horvath said that a fair will feature hands-on demonstrations, emergency supply checklists, evacuation planning workshops, and family-friendly activities.
With 12 people dying in the Pacific Palisades fire and 19 in the Eaton fire, it seems concrete information is needed, not family-friendly activities.
Emergency Preparedness Events in the Third District:
- Saturday, October 4: Topanga Community Center, 10am – 4pm
- Saturday, November 1: Calabasas Community Center, 10am – 1pm
- Sunday, November 16: Skirball Cultural Center, 9am – 1pm
The release states “Supervisor Horvath’s district, which includes high-risk zones, is on the frontlines of these emergencies. By extending National Preparedness Month into October and November with these fairs, she is ensuring sustained attention to readiness and resilience. Additional dates and locations, including in the San Fernando Valley, will be announced soon.”
The events are free and open to the public.
