The Getty Villa Museum, which annually hosts a classical tragedy or comedy, is inviting Pacific Palisades Community members who have been impacted by the Palisades Fire to join them at its 2025 outdoor theater production of Oedipus the King Mama! on Wednesday, September 3.
The performance will take place in the Getty Villa’s dramatic Outdoor Classical Theater, a venue modeled after ancient Greek and Roman prototypes. Working with local and nationally acclaimed theater companies, this series ambitiously reimagines and revives the myths and plays of antiquity, from the most venerated to long-overlooked works. These bold and celebrated productions re-tell ancient human stories that often parallel our contemporary experiences.
This year a musical combines Sophocles’ Oedipus the King with the music of the King of Rock & Roll Elvis Presley.
The story follows Oedipus, King of Malibu, who is surrounded by Suspicious Minds and realizing it’s Now or Never to find old King Laius’s murderer and end the plague.
The Oracle brands Oedipus as Trouble, a Hound Dog, and a Roustabout.. So, Oedipus tells the Oracle to Return to Sender! Queen Jocasta reminds her husband that he’s a Teddy Bear and asks him to Love Me Tender. But alas, Oedipus is heading for a one-way stay at the Heartbreak Hotel when he learns the truth of his mysterious past, realizing he’s The Devil in Disguise. And That’s not Alright, Mama.
The invitation for this fun romp is for two people and there is a limited number of free tickets available. They will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Complimentary parking will be arranged for all guests.
There will be a hosted reception at 6 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. performance, at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway.

Perhaps I am too late, but I wanted to register on behalf of my parents (85 and 83)
who are not very internet savvy. They/we lost the family home, and theater is a great distraction from the ongoing despondency. Willing to pay for the tickets as well. I would love for them to attend that night and be able to be surrounded with other Palisadians.
Sue, thank you so much for getting the word out!
If I may, my name is Rachel with the Getty. Please send an email to villainvite@getty.edu if you are interested in attending next Wednesday’s performance.
