Despite the Fire, Music Prevails

Palisades resident Larry Newman, who is the founder and director of the Children’s Music Workshop, which is based in elementary schools, has announced that 25th Annual All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra will be on Saturday, May 10. The concert will be held at 11 a.m. at Bel Air Church at 16221 Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles.

Children’s Music Workshop, founded by Newman more than 30 years ago, provides instrumental music instruction to schools throughout Los Angeles–including public and private schools in the Palisades.

Newman said, “This year’s performance holds profound meaning as we honor students and families affected by the devastating Palisades fire. Students from Pacific Palisades Elementary, Marquez Charter, and surrounding schools—many of whom were displaced or lost their homes—will perform in a powerful celebration of resilience, perseverance, and hope.”

Students range in age from seven to 12, and the average age of an orchestra member is 10. Each child is individually selected by his/her music teacher to participate.

“We are also producing a short-form documentary, spotlighting the stories of these brave young musicians and their families, which will air locally, and this year’s project promises to be among the most meaningful,” Newman said.

We’d be delighted to welcome your readers and any members of the Palisades community to the performance. While families of participating students previously purchased advance tickets to help underwrite concert expenses, we now know that we’ll have ample seating available for additional guests.

As a gesture of community support – we’re extending this invitation to neighbors and friends who would like to join us in celebrating these remarkable young musicians. No ticket is required at the door. Guests may simply let the ushers know they are attending as community supporters.

The annual broadcast of the concert has resulted in five Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards in the Children/Youth Programming category and the orchestra has been honored by the City Council at Los Angeles City Hall.

Doors open at 10:40 a.m.
